On Wednesday, May 10, the tradition of recognizing graduating Fairview High School seniors continued at the annual Scholars’ Reception ceremony.

Each year, Scholars’ Reception recognizes Fairview High School seniors who were awarded scholarships. This year, 33 seniors from the Class of 2023 were selected for scholarships totaling $87,850. In total, 36 scholarships were awarded that evening.

24 of the scholarships awarded at Scholars’ Reception are organized by the Fairview Park Education Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the education of students in the Fairview Park City School District. The remainder of the scholarships are organized through the hard work of the Fairview High School counseling office.

“It’s wonderful to get up there and see the kids, give them the scholarships, and see how excited they are to be a recipient of a scholarship we’ve chosen for them,” Denise Devine, president of the Fairview Park Education Foundation expressed. “It’s also inspiring for the families that give back to the students at Fairview High School because of a memorial scholarship.”

Scholarships awarded at Scholars’ Reception come from various sources. Many have ties to the Fairview Park City School District, including former teachers, administrators, Board of Education members and alumni. Local service and community organizations also provide their resources. However, all are proud supporters of Fairview and its students.

“I think that’s what makes us special,” Devine said. “The first three superintendents of our schools all have scholarships. And now there is a couple of alumni scholarships. In addition, some people were involved on the Board of Education.

“We have many scholarships with specialized criteria, which give students who may not have had the opportunity to get a scholarship before to receive one,” Devine added. “Our main objective is to give them to many students and not always all the same names.”

One thing that impressed Devine this year was the amount of support the Class of 2023 showed each other during the ceremony.

“I believe that this is a good class,” Devine expressed. “They seem to be very excited for each other to get scholarships and to be recognized. You would see somebody come up, and everyone else clapped like crazy. You see that, but I don’t think I’ve seen that to the extent that this class was. It just seemed that they were together as a group.”
